When Dick first talked about the idea of us "taking control" of our lives
at a young age, in opposition to God, it seemed like a strange thought.
But I just heard of a vivid example of exactly that happening. After
worship on Sunday, my wife saw a boy near her get hurt. My wife has
been learning quite a bit about how to minister to others, so she tried to
comfort the crying boy (about 4 years old, I believe), and offered to pray
for him, saying "It's going to be all right. You know, Jesus can make you
feel all better. Let's pray and ask Jesus to make you feel all
better quick. Can I pray for you?" He said, "No. I'll take care of it
myself!" and he continued crying. That immediately made me think of
what Dick had said, and I realized exactly what it is we do as children that
breaks God's heart: we reject Him by taking control of our lives into our
own hands, and by trying to solve problems ourselves, apart from Him.
